Entering The Mind Through The Eyes: an overview of Brainspotting

How I was introduced to Brainspotting:

I first heard about Brainspotting earlier this year, when my therapist introduced me to it during one of our sessions. While we explored it together, I started to do more reading about the technique on my own, and I became fascinated. My interest only grew when I actually started to see results from it myself.  I attended the Phase 1 training online in May of 2020, and signed up for phase II after only two days of the first phase. Since then, I have attended and completed many other phases and specialized trainings. I started using it in my practice, and completed hundreds of sessions with clients where I saw amazing results. After seeing this treatment work so well, I got certified in Brainspotting in March of 2021.

Brainspotting is a valuable technique, but many people don’t know a lot about it. I want to give people more information on this fascinating new treatment, so here are some common Frequently Asked Questions that I have been asked.

What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting (BSP) is a neuro experiential advanced form of Brain-Body mindfulness based in relational Trauma therapy. It was developed by David Grand, PhD, through his work with trauma patients. Brainspotting has been found to be an effective form of therapy for a variety of mental health concerns, including trauma, anxiety, physical pain, and negative emotions. According to Grand, “where you look can affect how you feel.”   He made these discoveries during his early work with young athletes. In Brainspotting, the client is the expert, while the therapist is merely present in a supportive role.

How does it work?

In Brainspotting, the Therapist and client identify the issue the client wants to discuss during session. The therapist then identifies body sensations the client has that are connected to that issue, and the client’s level of distress.  Then, the therapist moves a pointer around until they have discovered the client’s ‘Brainspot’, the spot in their field of vision that connects the client physically with the issue at hand. Once the therapist locates the spots, the pointer is held at that position, or moved around; how the session is set up is determined on an individual case-by-case basis. The client then explores any feelings or thoughts that are attached to that Brainspot. Various shifts in thoughts, body sensations, and emotions are noticed throughout the session. Some clients report progress during the session, and some notice progress afterwards. Some clients go deeper than others, and some clients are able to notice body sensations immediately, while some take longer to reach this state.    Each client process is unique, and what works for one person might need to be adjusted for someone else. […] Brainspotting is a therapy style built on the idea that “where you look affects how you feel.” It was developed by David Grand, PhD, in 2003. The therapy focuses on your brain’s ability to heal trauma by connecting to the parts of the brain where emotional regulation occurs. Eye positions, found with the help of an attuned therapist, activate spots in these parts that are associated with traumas and negative emotions, so you   can re-experience them in a safe space and work through them.
